Hidden features in VLC media player you have never heard of

VLC Media Player is the most popular and robust multi format, free media player available. The open source media player was publically released in 2001 by non-profit organization VideoLAN Project. VLC Media Player quickly became very popular thanks to its versatile multi-format playback capabilities. It was aided by compatibility and codec-issues which rendered competitor media players like KMPlayer, GOMPlayer and Windows Media Player useless to many popular video and music file formats. The easy, basic UI and huge array of customization options have enforced VLC Media Player's position at the top of the media players.

You may have spend many time in VLC for watching movies. But I'm sure, Most of you never heard of the following two features in VLC.

1. Built-in Video Converter

Probably, you may be using free/paid softwares to convert videos between different formats. Don't you know? VLC media player can also convert videos to various format. Surprised. Here is how!

  • Open VLC Media Player and select Media -> Convert/Save.
  •  Click "Add" button to add media files and click "Convert/Save".
  • In the next dialog box, choose the required file format. Click "Create a new profile" button if you want to create a new format.
  • Click "Browse" and select the Destination file's path and click "Start".
  • After the conversion process have been completed, your video is ready!
You can use this technique to compress video files and make them ready to upload in YouTube, WhatsApp etc.

2. Add watermark

You may have seen watermarks like company's logo, website address in videos. You can use VLC to add such watermark in a video.

  • Select Tools -> Effects and Filters.
  • Go to Video Effects -> Overlay.

  • You can add logo, text or erase an logo that was already in the video.
  • To save the video with watermark, choose Media -> Convert/Save and follow the above steps.
